  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion (diced)
  • 2 pounds ground beef chuck (or turkey)
  • 2 tablespoons diced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning blend
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 2 cans (14 ounces each) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) red kidney beans (drained)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • masa harina for thickening

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat canola oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until soft, about 3–5 minutes.
  2. Stir in garlic and ground beef; cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  3. Lower the heat and add seasonings: Italian blend, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, brown sugar, vinegar, crushed tomatoes, kidney beans, jalapeños, salt and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Simmer for about 10 minutes. Gradually add masa harina until desired thickness is achieved; cook for an additional 10 minutes.
  5. Serve hot with your choice of toppings like sour cream or cheese.
